According to these Zimbabwe engineering safety standards, the height of a balustrade must be a minimum of one metre to provide an effective barrier. This requirement ensures that the balustrade is at an optimal height to prevent accidental falls over the edge. In addition to height requirements, the gaps or spaces between balusters, also known as infills, play a vital role in ensuring safety. The infill should not exceed 900mm to prevent any potential risk of people accidentally slipping through or getting stuck in the gaps.
An essential aspect of balustrade safety lies in the space between balusters. A sphere of 125mm in diameter should not be able to pass through any of the openings. This criterion is in place to safeguard against the possibility of a child’s head or body becoming trapped between the balusters.
